Padauk (pah-DUKE) (African Padauk, Vermillion, Barwood)

Grows in: West Africa Typical Height: 100-130 ft (30-40 m)
Botanical Name (Latin): Pterocarpus soyauxii Trunk Diameter: 2-4 ft (.6-1.2 m)

Padauk is moderately heavy, strong, and stiff, with exceptional stability. It planes , moulds, turns, bores, sands, and carves well. It glues very well and can be brought to an excellent polish.

It’s a popular hardwood among hobbyist woodworkers because of its unique color and low cost

Typical Uses: Furniture, Cabinet Making, Fine Turning, Cutlery Handles, Chess Pieces
Possible Health Risks: Sensitizer; most common reactions simply include eye, skin, and respiratory irritation.
My Thoughts: I have used Padauk often as an accent color on projects, I think it turns nicely, it sands and finishes well. It stands out nicely when used with Ash, Wenge. I am sure it will be used often as I continue building things in the future.
